Today I combine August Break with the 52 Photos Project Gallery 17 {A Moment of Life}.
During this past week 17 has mentioned to me several times that we have not baked anything for some considerable time. Yesterday she made strong moves to rectify this, however my headache had other ideas. Today I woke thinking my head was about to explode but as the pain subsided I decided she had a point.
17 began, creating a chocolate love-heart cake for Hub’s an my 23rd wedding anniversary tomorrow. You will have to wait till tomorrow to see how it looks. Hint, it is pretty gorgeous and absolutely SMOTHERED in chocolate buttercream. What could be bad about that?

Yesterday, while discussions were still underway about baking, 19 put in his usual plea for banana cake. You can’t really deny someone a clear request like that, especially when you have the ingredients.
I know, too many cakes aren’t good for you. Beating the whatsit out of butter and Demerara sugar make up for it, at least for your arm. Honestly. Would I lie to you?

The thing with a cake is, it’s not muffins. Muffins or cupcakes means you get a whole one to yourself. Okay, they don’t look glammy but they are bananay and that’s what counts.

Then I thought, there are only two eggs left and some apples that look a little tired, let’s make apple cake. In honesty I have had this in mind since reading Catherine’s post a couple of days ago and seeing her beautiful apple cake. Listen, I am nothing if not suggestible.

Unlike Catherine I didn’t have all the ingredients but then I wouldn’t have used them all anyway. This is supposed to use almond essence, I used vanilla. There was no mention of spices, I added cinaminaminon and All Spice, because I’m a rebel and why be constrained by an ingredient list?

Instead of a topping of flaked almonds I used more Demerara. It made a gorgeous crust.

It is the type of cake that doesn’t look like much but tastes delicious.

Sigh, extra laps round the track for 17 and I after this. Plus there will be another baked tomorrow evening for 13′s birthday on Sunday.

Who said people don’t read blogs not get inspiration from them, if only I could send you all a slice of spicy apple cake, you will just have to take my word for it being delicious.

I have lovely memories of baking with my Mother.
I know what you mean about the extra laps. I do the same too as I have given up on trying to hold back on eating what I enjoy:)
Penbleth - Thank you Juana. We have been much more careful these week after a weekend of goodies. Such a shame delicious things are so bad for the waistline.
